About SMUT The Poet

Carl Smothers (A.K.A. S.M.U.T) is a soldier bred poet that goes by this acronym (which means Somebody Might Understand This).  The name was derived while he was overseas in Korea (2003-2006) where he began his journey from Carl Smothers the soldier to S.M.U.T. the poet.  After returning home, he experienced the new revolution of poetry in Texas where he felt the wave of the spoken word scene.  S.M.U.T. got his start (in New Orleans) at Sweet Lorraine’s.  He has hosted open mics and created showcases across the city for local artist to perform since 2009. ( Brown Sugar Thursday, Poets Corner, Best of Both Worlds, Acoustic Conversations and more..

He is the creator of the Epic Showcase “Sex vs Love Nola” and The CEO and founder of his own company Smothers Productions.

Ashé Cafe Live is a series of Instagram Live interviews every Friday at 5 PM CT that help us stay connected, check-in and on family, friends as well as culture bearers, culture keepers, artists, activists and advocates from the Diaspora.
