Sistahs Making a Change

Joshua-David Oyetubo leads a Vinyasa Yoga class that combines the deep focus and alignment of Iyengar with the fluidity and energy of ashtanga. As a teacher, Joshua encourages mindfulness both on and off the mat, with a sprinkling of yoga philosophy, personal experience, and laughter.

Join JD on Tuesdays for Vinyasa Yoga!

After a few introductory experiences, Joshua dedicated himself to the practice in May 2016. There is a saying that goes, “when the student is ready, a teacher arrives.” As if by chance, after living in the same city for years; he became lost on his way to his very first yoga class. In a panic, and at the wrong studio from where he had purchased passes/ signed up, feeling disruptive! He was seen, greeted, and guided to to open and expand and to continue to take up space for the next hour in spite of his conditioning, which trained him to make himself smaller. Immediately, he felt drawn to this idea he later came to understand as Pratipaksha Bhavana. A yogic principle from the Yoga Sutras that suggests that one way to discontinue negative states of thinking is through the discipline of cultivating the opposite or "flipping the energy." This and so many experiences later led Joshua to begin his YTT journey in the spring for 2017, where he participated in Hilltops 200 & 500 Hr programs.

Since, Joshua has continued to have a deep-seated connection with yoga as a spiritual and physical practice. Joshua was trained by a 31-year yogini Hilaire Lockwood at Hilltop Yoga in Raja yoga through the lineage of Sri T. Krishnamachariya. He has continued to take workshops with influential instructors like Bryan Kest, Maty Ezraty, Doug Swenson and Kino Mcgregor. Joshua will guide his students through all 8 limbs of traditional yoga; while mixing in elements of the chakra systems as a path to observe the ways in which we are bound in patterns that no longer serve us. He hopes students leave class feeling grounded, open, and connected with this ancient practice that has much to offer each of us.
