Ashé Cultural Arts Center, Arts New Orleans and the City of New Orleans present “Art of the Black Experience.” The exhibited works are in the finals to become part of the City of New Orleans Percent for Art collection. Selected artwork will be purchased to hang in City Hall, public libraries, NORD community centers, and other city buildings.
Community members were are invited to vote on their favorite art pieces during opening weekend, Dec 3- Dec 5th, 2021. “Art of the Black Experience” seeks to recognize Black people's contributions and experiences, ranging from cultural practices to heroism. The artwork speaks to the rich history, cultural practices, and spirituality of Black New Orleans; civil rights history and contemporary struggles for racial justice; under-told stories of Black heroes and activism; and Black joy, healing, strength, and wellbeing.
Following the community vote, the selection committee will decide which artwork will be purchased to become part of the City of New Orleans permanent collection. Up to $100,000 of artwork will be purchased. Once final decisions are made, representatives of City facilities will be invited to choose their selections.
The exhibit will be on view and open to the public until January 28, 2022. Artwork that is not purchased by the Percent for Art Program will remain on view and available for purchase at Ashé Cultural Arts Center through the remainder of the exhibition.
