Ashé Cultural Arts Center, in collaboration with local culture bearers, offers a series of culturally significant, integrative, and educational field trips. These field trips can be hosted at your site, sites of historical significance, or at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center.
The arts of the African Diaspora are used to create interactive experiences to stimulate an enhanced knowledge of how Africa has and continues to impact our lives.
FIELD TRIP SERIES OFFERINGS:
Imagination Tour with Bamboula 2000
This interactive drum and dance workshop transports students from New Orleans to Africa, South America and the Caribbean. Traveling on “Imagination Airlines,” participants experience the culture of the countries they “visit” through drumming, dance, and song. Stories of each nation visited help to weave this Imagination Tour into the broader understanding of place, people, and cultural practices. When one comes to an Imagination Tour, they don’t just see the culture, they embody the culture. The Imagination Tour is perfect for students of all ages!
Freedom Songs with Wendi Moore-O’Neal
Freedom songs are and have always been an integral part of Black resistance movements–from African chants and ring shouts, wailing work songs by our enslaved ancestors, to the powerful voices of those who marched in the face of violent racists. Freedom was the goal and the songs were the propellent.
Wendi Moore-O’Neal is a strong, powerful voice that uses freedom songs to bring awareness and understanding of how these songs propelled a movement that changed the world. Attendees are guided through participation of this interactive offering for all ages.
Has Anyone Heard of Langston Hughes
This one man show features actor Chakula cha Jua performing some of Langston Hughes’ renown poems, including favorites: The Negro Speaks of Rivers and Harlem (What Happens To A Dream Deferred). Two versions of the show are available; one for primary grades, and another for secondary.You will know Langston Hughes after experiencing this dynamic field trip.
The Kai Knight Silhouette Dance Ensemble
The Kai Knight Silhouette Dance Ensemble is a God-centered community company that promotes family and community strength and healing through spiritually, morally and socially-conscious works. The Ensemble, composed of youth and adult company members, uses contemporary/cultural dance forms and theater as an outreach medium. Silhouette will take you on a Diasporic journey of movement through the dance forms of Africa, Haiti, the Caribbean, and New Orleans. This field trip is appropriate for all age groups.
