Join Ashé Cultural Arts Center and the New Orleans African American Museum for the exhibition closing of SEEING BLACK's - First Frame and In the Spirit of Black.
On Tuesday, May 30 from 6-7pm, come on over to NOAAM's Blue House one last time to breathe life into FIRST FRAME, an immersive installation engaging the photography of Florestine Perrault Collins- the first Black Woman photographer in New Orleans. Exhibition admission is free, and guests are encouraged to 'dress to the NINES' as 'camera ready' is the dress code!
On Friday, June 2 from 6-9pm at Ashé Powerhouse Theater (1731 Baronne Street), view the legendary In the Spirit of Black exhibition one more time as we celebrate the work from seventy-five photographers showcasing over 120 images. These pieces reflect a versatility of styles and approaches documenting elements of Black life, self-expression, cultural traditions, spirituality, and remembrance. We also invite you to enjoy a vibrant, closing conversation with the esteemed curators of In the Spirit of Black: Kalamu ya Salaam, Eric Waters and Girard Mouton III.
This co-presentation is hosted by Ashé’s Chief Creative Officer, Frederick “Wood” Delahoussaye and NOAAM's Executive Director & Chief Curator, Gia Hamilton.
In the Spirit of Black closes June 3th at the Ashé Powerhouse Theater. First Frame closes June 4th at the New Orleans African American Museum.
SEEING BLACK: Black Photography in New Orleans 1840 & Beyond, initially conceptualized by Kalamu ya Salaam in 2020 as a fine art print book featuring the photography of historical and contemporary Black photographers, has expanded in its formation and scale, engaging multiple partners and the work of 80+ Black photographers through a series of exhibitions, a publication through the University of New Orleans Press, a digital platform and index (an interactive site coming soon), and a robust slate of public programming planned over the next two years.
