Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was educated in the New Orleans Public School system and is a graduate of Dillard University. Jamilah holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Faith Community Nursing. She is a Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother of the most wonderful gifts from God that anyone could ask for and works as a Health and Wellness Consultant at the Ashe’ Cultural Arts Center and with the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation as a Community Outreach Nurse.

In addition to her work in community wellness Jamilah also serves as a leader in preserving and promoting the cultural traditions of her African ancestors. Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is affectionately known in her community as Mama Jamilah. She is co-Founder of the Congo Square Preservation Society, Kumbuka African Drum and Dance collective, and Bamboula 2000. Mama Jamilah has performed and taught African dance and culture for over 40 years. She is a gifted healer, dancer, singer, percussionist, and choreographer. Mama Jamilah has been a part of the Black Masking Mardi Gras Indian tradition since age 16 and is presently a member of Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society.
