We Grew Here
About the exhibition:
From the earliest days of our nation, Black people were instrumental in its economic growth. "We Grew Here," New Orleans artist/muralist Kentrice Schexnayder's first solo exhibit, sheds light on the many important contributions of our "cotton-picking" ancestors.
"We Grew Here" takes us on a journey from the 1800s to the present day, marking historic milestones in Black American economy, including ownership of assets and the acquisition of wealth in its many forms.
This exhibit seeks to undo the negative connotations associated with Black people working in the cotton field and shed light on the legacy they left for future generations.

Kentrice Schexnayder
Kentrice Schexnayder is a multifaceted New Orleans artist. From timeless fine arts pieces sold nationwide to one of the largest historical murals in New Orleans history Schexnayder is becoming a nationally renown artist.
Inspired to be an artist from the ripe age of 6, Schexnayder graduated in 2010 from the University of New Orleans with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a minor in business. Schexnayder used her knowledge of business and her art skills to launch her establishment “Ken 6 Studio” in 2015.
Schexnayder volunteers at local camps and non-profits including WQUE 93.3 FM’s Wild Wayne Summer Camp. Schexnayder wants upcoming creatives to know that they don’t have to give up because creativity is needed in the world.
